Welcome to Dr.Alexander’s Lab

This Research Lab investigates how cervical spine structure, posture, and joint movement influence migraine, neck pain, and cognitive or behavioral function. By combining advanced imaging, motion-capture analysis, and neuropsychological assessment, the lab explores the relationships between spinal alignment, functional movement patterns, and neurological outcomes. Through clinical and community-based recruitment and interdisciplinary collaboration, the lab aims to generate evidence that improves understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

Current Research

1. Cervical Lordosis & Forward Head Posture Study

Investigating spinal structure in relation to migraine and neck pain

This study measures cervical and structural alignment in subjects with and without migraine and/or neck pain symptoms.
Key procedures include:

  • Developing a composite score based on cervical curve, forward head posture, and curve apex location

  • Assessing spinous rotation and vertebral wedging via AP cervical imaging

  • Evaluating intersegmental motion and alignment changes on flexion-extension X-rays.

  • Optional: Ultrasound imaging of cervical and thoracic joints in collaboration with Michael Cosgrave

2. Joint Movement Analysis Using Dari Motion Capture

Exploring functional movement patterns connected to headache and spine-related disorders

This project uses advanced 3D motion capture technology to measure joint movement, gait, range of motion, and exercise mechanics.
Procedures include:

  • Comprehensive movement assessments using the Dari Motion Capture system

  • Optional: Collaborating with Dr. Schilaty at USF to analyze jerk movement between the head and upper thoracic spine

3. Cervical Lordosis, Behavior & Cognitive Function

Understanding how spinal structure influences neuropsychological outcomes

This study examines whether variations in cervical curvature are associated with changes in cognitive, emotional, or behavioral function.
Procedures include:

  • Administering neuropsychological assessments (GAD, depression, ADHD, perceived stress, and more)

  • Integrating statistical findings from Experiments 1 and 2 with cognitive and behavioral outcomes

Participant Recruitment

The lab is actively recruiting individuals both with and without migraine and/or neck pain symptoms, and with or without cognitive, emotional and/or behavioral conditions.
Sources include:
– Patients at the Migraine and Neuro Rehab Clinic
-Community volunteers

-Collaboration with other healthcare professionals to establish a database for anonymous cervical X-rays with connected history/complaint/condition information.

All research involving human subjects has been and is being done under formal IRB (Institutional Review Board) approval to ensure safety and proper ethical and research protocols, practices and standards.

Radiology Partnership

The lab is establishing an imaging partnership with Rayon in Springville to support high-quality X-ray acquisition for research protocols.
