Welcome to Dr. Mizrachi’s Lab
Dr. Dario Mizrachi’s laboratory investigates the intersection of mechanical energy, cell adhesion, and biologics to understand and address some of the most critical challenges in modern medicine. Our multidisciplinary research, which draws on biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, and cellular physiology, aims to develop novel therapeutic strategies that enhance surgical outcomes and improve patient recovery.
Dr. Dario Mizrachi
Globally, over 310 million major surgeries are performed annually. Despite advances in surgical care, 1–4% of patients do not survive, and up to 15% experience severe postoperative complications. These statistics place surgical morbidity and mortality on par with the world’s leading causes of death. Our lab is dedicated to uncovering the biological mechanisms underlying these complications and developing biologically based interventions to reduce surgical risk and enhance tissue recovery.
Harnessing Mechanical Energy for Healing
While medicine has long relied on chemical (small molecules) and electrical (neural stimulation) energy to treat disease, mechanical energy remains largely untapped. Our laboratory pioneers innovative ways to utilize mechanical forces in the clinic—exploring how cells sense, respond to, and generate physical forces that influence healing, coagulation, and immune responses.
Cell Adhesion and Membrane Proteins
Cell adhesion is fundamental to tissue integrity and communication. Through structures such as tight junctions, cells form dynamic barriers that regulate molecular exchange, immune defense, and waste management. Our research examines how these adhesive forces are not only influenced by mechanical energy but also generate it, impacting processes such as tissue development, inflammation, and cancer metastasis.
A major focus of our lab is the engineering of water-soluble membrane proteins—a breakthrough approach to creating novel biologics. Traditionally, membrane proteins have not been utilized as biologics due to their insolubility. Our work aims to overcome this limitation, expanding the therapeutic potential of biologics in treating a wide range of diseases.
